The lecture will first offer a brief review of the revolutions of
1989-91. Then the following topics will be dealt with:

1.     the transformation from planned to market economies in the former Eastern Bloc;

2.    the transformation of political cultures in Eastern and
Western Europe;

3.    the enlargement of the European Union;

4.    lingering memories of the past.
