Peace is often understood as the absence of war, but its meaning is far more complex. This webinar explores the evolving concept of peace through its political, social, institutional, and everyday dimensions, tracing how understandings of peace have changed over time. From the “victor’s peace” of early history to Enlightenment ideals, constitutional and institutional models, and the emergence of international peace architectures, the session highlights how peace has been shaped by power, norms, and governance. Particular attention is given to peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and state-building, as well as to more recent debates on hybrid peace, peace formation, and forms of counter-peace.
Prof. Oliver Richmond will guide participants through these perspectives, encouraging critical reflection on whose peace is being promoted, how it is constructed, and what a more inclusive and sustainable peace might look like today.
