The webinar focuses on the relationship between young people and social media in contemporary society.
In the new media ecosystem, characterized by Web 2.0 and the rise of digital platforms, social media plays a central role, especially for Generation Z. Young people use these platforms not only for communication and entertainment but also to access information, express their identities, and build networks of relationships. Given that media environments are increasingly pervasive and hybrid, they now represent a complementary (though not exclusive) dimension to face-to-face interactions. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are becoming more significant for socialization, as young people spend a considerable amount of time on them, encountering new role models and social references.
Social media platforms naturally present both opportunities and risks for both young people and adults. While they provide new possibilities for interaction and learning, they also expose users to issues such as misinformation and cyberbullying.
For these reasons, it is essential that young people develop digital literacy skills, enabling them to use media critically and consciously. This is fundamental for navigating a complex and ever-evolving digital environment and for practicing informed citizenship.
