Generation Z and Sustainability: How can education help young people develop the competences to bring about ecological change?
Dr Susan Brown and Dr Raichael Lock
Abstract

This webinar explores how education can equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to drive ecological and social transformation in a rapidly changing world. Drawing on the concept of “ecological literacy” developed by David Orr, the session emphasizes the need to cultivate not only critical thinking and digital competences, but also empathy, creativity, and moral courage—qualities essential for navigating complex sustainability challenges.

Through real-world examples—such as service learning projects in Greater Manchester and student-led campaigns like Teach the Future—the webinar highlights how schools can foster intergenerational collaboration, civic engagement, and a deep sense of agency among learners. Special attention is given to addressing eco-anxiety in young people by offering participatory, outdoor, and creative learning experiences that build resilience and hope.

Participants will explore key 21st-century competences for sustainable living within planetary boundaries, and be introduced to educational resources from grassroots and global initiatives, including UNESCO’s sustainability frameworks. The discussion will consider how schools, educators, and young people across regions can contribute meaningfully to shaping a more just and sustainable future.
